Tips for Camping with Kids

1. Teach them a new skill

Whether it’s a lesson on why leveling is so important, how to build the perfect campfire for marshmallow roasting, or basic wilderness survival skills, get your kids involved in the process and pass on your knowledge.

2. Share a campfire story

While the marshmallows are roasting, try telling a fun, but not too spooky, campfire story. Check out this great list of 13 kid-friendly campfire stories, including the classic favourite, Going on a Bear Hunt.

3. Cook a campsite feast together

Plan some time to cook together on your trip. Kids will love to help building their own tacos in a bag, mix and matching favourite veggies and meat with these skewers, or rolling up some fun Campfire Crescent Dogs.

4. Try a new outdoor sport

Challenge yourself and your kids to learn something new together and try out a new outdoor sport! If you’re RVing near water, take advantage of rentals and try something your family hasn’t experienced before, like Stand-Up Paddle Boarding or kayaking.

5. Hold a campground scavenger hunt

Get out into nature and explore with a campground scavenger hunt. Kids will love hunting through the campsite, finding leaves and spotting birds. Make your own with these great suggestions, or find one online, like the one pictured.

6. Try Geocaching

Many national parks across the country offer great geocaching opportunities. Like an interactive treasure hunt played with a GPS device or smartphone, it’s a great way to explore and learn about the unique natural and cultural heritage of the park you’re visiting. You can play at Banff National Park, the Gulf Island National Park Reserve,  Kouchibouguac National Park, and many more!
