Keeping Your RV’s Bathroom Clean
It’s a topic no RV owner wants to talk about: the bathroom. Unfortunately, there are some harsh realities about traveling with a tiny space as your bathroom. But there’s no need to worry! At McGovern’s RV & Marine, we’ve compiled some quick tips for keeping your RV’s bathroom fresh and clean. If you have any questions or you want to buy a new camper, reach out to our friendly staff at our Grand Prairie, Alberta location. We also proudly serve Edmonton!
The Toilet
Alright, we have to start with the main appliance in your camper’s bathroom: the toilet. Your RV’s toilet will require a little bit more maintenance than your toilet at home. Instead of a fancy plumbing system that connects to your city’s sewer system, your trailer’s toilet flushes into a blackwater (holding) tank under your rig where it waits to be dumped.
Consider getting one-ply RV toilet paper. This is necessary because your camper’s toilet is more fragile than your at home model. You will also need to invest in some camper-specific products that are designed to dissolve waste and keep odor under control.
Your owner’s manual should have some information about what products you should use to keep your toilet clean. It’s important to make sure every product you use is approved for your camper’s appliance.
The Blackwater Tank
Over time, the blackwater tank will fill up. You’ll need to stay on top of this and empty and clean it so no foul odors or backups develop. However, you don’t want to empty the tank too soon since this can lead to a slow emptying process as well as waste and toilet paper not having enough time to break down. We suggest waiting until the tank is between two-thirds to three-quarters full before dumping it at a dump station. Don’t forget to close the tank’s valve when you’re done.
The Shower
Showers can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew, especially in a compact area. That’s why it’s important to keep up with your shower cleaning/maintenance. After taking a shower, travelers should wipe down the shower head and walls to keep soap from building up.
Remember to regularly empty the gray water tank so it doesn’t back up into the shower drain. It’s also important to give the shower a deep clean after every trip. You definitely don’t want any mildew to grow in between your outdoor excursions.
We hope these tips help you keep your RV’s bathroom clean and functional! If you still have questions or you want to buy a new camper, contact us today at McGovern’s RV & Marine in Grand Prairie, Alberta near Edmonton. We can’t wait to help you make your next road trip the best one yet!
